Unique Style

“We can write original stories, or we can accept the scripts that others have written for us” Lyn Slater (Accidental Icon)

Lyn Slater has described how she fell into her career as a fashion blogger and style icon while in her 60s as a misunderstanding. She was mistaken for a fashion celebrity while standing in the street near a Fashion Week event in New York.  She  began her blog, Accidental Icon, in 2014 and hasn’t looked back. She has caught the eye of Ari Seth Cohen (Advanced Style) and collaborated with Uniqlo. Other collaborations are in the pipeline.

Lyn also has a successful career in academia and works as a sociology professor teaching law and child welfare at Fordham University. And like the majority of mature aged women she has a family with whom she likes to spend time. as if that were not enough, Lyn is taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where she lives with her partner and main photographer.

Her style is refreshingly original: urban, artistic, comfortable and minimalist. She wears a lot of black and white sometimes punctuating her outfits with a spot of colour. She does not conform to stereotypes of age and gender and enjoys exploring the new and creative designs that the city of New York offers.

Her advice for others who wish to experiment is; don’t be afraid to take a risk …. take small comfortable ones at first.
